will.i.am has backed a campaign for Sir Tom Jones to return to The Voice UK

After it was announced that both Cheryl and Aitch had joined the judging panel for the next series of ITV/STV series The Voice UK, Sir Tom Jones vented his anger and frustration at the broadcaster, accusing them of 'firing a 86-year-old'.

Taking to his social media pages earlier this month, the 'Delilah' hitmaker wrote: 'To be clear, I did not want to leave The Voice as I love the show and really appreciate the audience. ITV made this decision — obviously a while ago, and I was told just recently.

'The reason given is because of a financial difficulty with insurance. They now say in the press they wanted to ‘refresh’ the show, and with a new coaching line-up there wouldn’t be a chair for me. They are offering a much-reduced role where I would make an appearance but without being actually involved from the start, and I’m not thrilled about that.

'So the only thing I know right now, is that there’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job. Sir Tom Jones'. (sic)

After seeing the news of Sir Tom's exit, superfan Aaron Howlett took it upon himself to set up an online petition to reinstate Sir Tom, which has since had more than 60,000 signatures.

The petition reads: 'Sir Tom Jones, the legendary artist with decades of music industry experience, has recently been removed from his role as a judge on The Voice UK by ITV. This decision has not only disappointed millions of his fans but has also deprived aspiring singers of the chance to be guided by someone of his stature and expertise.

'For many fans, Sir Tom is an essential part of The Voice UK. His genuine interactions, insightful critiques, and mentorship have had a profound impact not only on the contestants but also on the audience. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the show, having mentored winning acts and propelled careers of numerous artists who otherwise might have gone unnoticed.

'This removal seems unfair and disrespectful, not just to Sir Tom, who has dedicated himself to the role since its inception, but also to the loyal viewers who have supported the show because of his participation. His presence has been integral to the chemistry and success of the programme.'

It goes on to state: 'Furthermore, his removal could negatively impact the ratings and reputation of The Voice UK, considering the substantial following and goodwill he brings. The audience values authenticity, and Sir Tom embodies that, which translates to trust and warmth in their television experience. His legendary status and musical prowess play a crucial role in cultivating the contestants’ artistic senses and boosting their confidence.

'With all due respect, ITV should reconsider their decision. Bringing back Sir Tom to The Voice UK will not just honor his contributions but will also resonate with the fans' desire for an authentic and enriching viewing experience. The mentoring and nurturing environment Sir Tom provides is unparalleled and essential to maintaining the core values of the show.

'Please join me in calling upon ITV to reinstate Sir Tom Jones as a judge on The Voice UK. It is vital for the continuity, integrity, and success of a programme many cherish and look forward to.'

It seems Sir Tom's former co-star will.i.am is equally annoyed at his dumping from the show, collaborating on an Instagram post about the petition with Change.org.

At the time of publication, the petition has over 66,000 signatures, but it looks like filming for the 2027 series has already started without Sir Tom.

After ITV/STV bosses made an official announcements about the new line-up, new judge Cheryl was spotted partying in Manchester earlier this month, alongside Kelly Rowland.

The pair hit the town at Via bar on Canal Streel, where the girls belted out their hit singles to a delighted crowd.

Meanwhile, the current series of The Voice UK, which was filmed last year and features Sir Tom, started back in August and currently airs every Saturday night on ITV/STV.
