Exclusive: Shed Seven to start recording new album next month
Rick Witter says they have a 'new set of songs' in the bag

Shed Seven frontman Rick Witter has exclusively revealed to Absolute Radio that the band have written “a new set of songs” for their next studio album, and they’re hitting the recording studio in May.
To celebrate the announcement of Shed Seven’s Shedcember X UK tour, which takes in 23 dates across the UK this November and December, the ever-genial Rick Witter joined Absolute Radio’s Jay Lawrence for a chat.
More than three decades into their glittering career, Shed Seven hit Number 1 twice in 2024 with their albums ‘A Matter of Time’ and ‘Liquid Gold’, the latter of which features reimagined versions of classic Shed Seven tunes.
When reflecting on their incredible chart feat, Rick told Jay: “Yeah, (it was) amazing. It still hasn’t really sunk in to be honest.
“We have just written a new set of songs, so we’re gonna go in the studio next month and start recording that. So, there is more brand-new material and it sounds really good. So, we are very good at what we do, thank you! (laughs)”
When Jay asked if Number 2 would be a letdown with the next album, Rick responded: “Well, it’s the position we find ourselves in isn’t it?! We’ve waited so long for a Number 1 and then they’re like buses, two came along at once.
“Obviously, that is what you want but at the end of the day, it’s a chart place isn’t it? As long as the songs are there forever and people love them forever, (chart position) doesn’t really matter.”
Rick went on: “We’re enjoying what’s happening to us now kind of because of the fact that we kind of lost it a little bit (in the 1990s).
“So to get this chance again to behave like rock and rollers and be accepted is amazing, and to be able to still go out and play songs that we wrote in 1992 and everyone is singing every word of it, it’s amazing. So, we’re very thankful for that.”
Reflecting on the recent 30th anniversary of Shed Seven’s blockbuster third album ‘A Maximum High’, which spawned the anthems ‘Getting Better’, ‘Going for Gold’ and ‘On Standby’, Rick admitted it’s “quite scary” how fast the years have gone.
He added: “Do you know what though, we wrote that majority of that in… basically there’s a Cockerill’s potato plant just on the outskirts of York where we live and we didn’t have anywhere to rehearse. The son of the owner said there were some disused offices in the potato plant.
“So we wrote most of the songs for A Maximum High in this area, and not so long back they knocked that down and built a B&Q on the site. The exact point where they sell the sheds at B&Q is where we wrote ‘A Maximum High’. You couldn’t make it up could you?!”
Tickets to Shed Seven’s Shedcember UK tour go on sale from Absolute Radio Tickets at 10am tomorrow (24th April).
“We can’t wait to get out there up and down the UK and soak up what is a unique atmosphere at a Shed Seven gig,” says Rick.
“Expect the big hits along with a few surprises and the thrill of us all singing our hearts out together for a couple of hours. See you down the front.”
