Morrissey has cancelled tonight’s (Thursday 12th March) concert at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia due to “sleep deprivation” caused by loud noises outside his hotel from Fallas celebrations.
The singer’s representatives have posted a series of messages on his official Morrissey Central website explaining why the show has been axed.
“Having travelled for two days by road, Morrissey reached the hotel in Valencia late on Wednesday,” the first statement read.
“Any form of sleep or rest throughout the night was impossible due to festival noise / loud techno singing / megaphone announcements. This experience has left Morrissey in a catatonic state.”
A few hours later, a second post read: “Tonight's scheduled show in Valencia has been rendered impossible due to sleep deprivation. Morrissey drove from Milan to Valencia but has been unable to rest in Valencia due to noise.
“The show is not cancelled. Circumstances render the show impossible.”
Morrissey himself shared a rare quote about his plight, saying it was "indescribable hell. It will take me one year to recover. And that is an understatement".
The Fallas is a traditional celebration held annually every March in Valencia. It's the patronal festival of the town, for which the patron saint is Saint Joseph.
The five main days celebrated are from 15th to 19th March, while the Mascletà, a pyrotechnic spectacle of firecracker detonation, takes place every day from 1st to 19th March.
Despite cancelling five North American shows in January, Morrissey has successfully played nine European shows over the past month including his sold-out London The O2 concert.
Morrissey is currently at Number 2 on the Official Album Chart will his 14th solo effort ‘Make-up is a Lie’.
