Massive mural honouring Mani unveiled in his hometown
A fitting tribute to the Stone Roses and Primal Scream legend
Work is complete on a massive mural honouring late-great Stone Roses and Primal Scream legend Gary 'Mani' Mounfield in Greater Manchester.
The community-led, crowdfunded mural adorns the side of one of Mani’s favourite pubs, the La Fardy on Oldham Road in his hometown of Failsworth.
Created by street artist Pic.One.Art. over 11 days, the mural depicts a smiling Mani on stage with The Stone Roses in 2012 and an earlier image of him playing bass.
There’s also an iconic Stone Roses lemon, and the ‘Screamadelica’ album cover in a nod to Mani’s distinguished career with Primal Scream.
The crowdfunder was organised by the not-for-profit GRIT Studios, and after reaching its initial funding goals, the project and expanded to raise additional funds for Maggie's Centre Manchester, a cancer charity that supported Mani and his beloved wife Imelda.
Mani's brother, Greg Mounfield, told the BBC: "We've fell out of this pub quite a few times over the years me and my brother and all our friends.
"I think it's a great spot to have the mural on; it's a great wall, it's a busy main road, everyone will see it going to the M60, and I think it's fitting."
John McCaulay, co-founder of GRIT Studios, added: "At his funeral Ian Brown said, 'we need to do a gold statue of Mani in Manchester'.
"I don't know anything about gold statues but at GRIT we do commission a lot of public-facing street art, so it seemed fitting to do it in Failsworth."
Mani died aged 63 in November 2025 due to complications from the lung disease emphysema.
