Chris Martin plays secret Yorkshire pub gig ahead of Coldplay shows

Singer made a surprise visit to the The Puzzle Hall Inn in Sowerby Bridge

Chris Martin stunned locals with a surprise set in a pub in a West Yorkshire pub ahead of Coldplay’s two stadium shows in Hull next week.

The singer grabbed his guitar and made a surprise visit to the The Puzzle Hall Inn in Sowerby Bridge last night (14th August).

As well as playing the gig, Martin reportedly chatted and posed for pictures with fans for an hour and even gave out some tickets for Coldplay’s show at Hull’s Craven Park on Monday.

One attendee said he woke up his teenage daughters after getting a tip-off about the gig.

Andy Varley, from Halifax, told the BBC: "Imagine being 17 and you like Coldplay and your dad blunders in and asks do want to go and see Chris Martin right now...get dressed we're going in five minutes."

He added: "I just bundled them in the car and got there just as he was starting.

"People just turned up for a drink and saw Chris Martin unloading pianos - can you believe that?"

Another fan who posted a pic and video clip of the event wrote: “When Chris Martin comes to your local for an impromptu gig, has a chat on the wall with us and then sings us the Coldplay song we walked down the aisle to 24 years ago.

“Did those couple of hours really just happen? How utterly wonderful tonight was.”

According to the Halifax Courier, Martin told the crowd: “Thank you for letting me play at The Puzzle Inn. Normally I rehearse on my own, you see, so it’s nice to have some company.”

“I spoke with this guy earlier, so I’m going to do one of his songs,’ he added, referring to Sir Elton John, before singing ‘Rocket Man’.

“What do you think the chances are we could keep this a secret between us? A 93% chance?”

He continued: “I want to sincerely say thank you so much for letting me play in your garden, and on Monday in Hull I’ll be thinking of you all and how kind you’ve been to a southerner. I’m very grateful.”

Following the Hull shows, Coldplay will bring their record breaking ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour to a climax with a huge run of 10 dates at Wembley Stadium.
